Google launches open access to ChatGPT competitor Bard in US, UK

There are, however, a few functional differences here compared to Bing AI. For one thing, Bing AI on desktop doesn’t offer speech-to-text in its input bar (though the app does), while Bard can tap your laptop’s microphone for you to dictate your queries. But Bard will certainly foster some debates about plagiarism and the relationship between Google and third-party websites. This isn’t a new issue as Google already tries to give instant answers on Google.com without having to visit a separate website. At the bottom of the answer, you can rate the answer with a thumbs up or thumbs down, restart the conversation or click on a “Google It” button to switch to Google’s search engine. When Google first unveiled Bard last month, there wasn’t much to see other than a lengthy blog post written by Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The model used in Bard is based on Google’s own LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) — the company is using a lightweight and optimized version of LaMDA.

The mistake scared some investors and coincided with a rout for the share price of Google’s parent company Alphabet, erasing $100 billion from Alphabet’s market value. Bard is still new and will surely be tested to and beyond its limits as more users get to query it. Google says the upgraded Bard is particularly good at tackling coding queries, including debugging and explaining chunks of code in more than 20 languages, so some of today’s upgrades are focused on this use case. These include the new dark mode, improved citations for code (which will not only offer sources but also explain the snippets), and a new export button. This can already be used to send code to Google’s Colab platform but will now also work with another browser-based IDE, Replit (starting with Python queries).

Microsoft added AI image generation powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E system to Bing in March, while both OpenAI and Microsoft have been exploring how to integrate chatbots with the wider web. OpenAI first announced this feature for ChatGPT earlier this year, with example use cases of using the bot to book a restaurant through OpenTable or order a grocery delivery through Instacart. In the early 2010s, Google was experiencing a sense of panic as Facebook was on the rise, and Google feared that the social network giant would soon overshadow their search engine. Then-CEO Larry Page instructed his employees that their bonuses would now be linked to Google’s success in the social media sphere in response. This instruction led to a wave of social integrations across Google’s products, which the user base widely disliked. When ChatGPT was first released, it was open to the public for testing, and anyone interested could simply access the program via OpenAI’s website.
